Short Bible Reflections for Teens
We live in an age of busyness. To some degree we are all affected by this culture of busyness, activity piled upon activity. We are obsessed with doing, producing, accomplishing, achieving, and keeping up or getting ahead of those around us. Besides the toll this busyness takes on our families and ourselves, there is the danger that we can become too busy for Jesus.
The story of Martha and Mary is always a positive reminder of the importance of resting in God’s presence. This is what we are going to look at today
Luke 10 - The Message
38-40 As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” 41-42 The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”
In our Bible reading, Jesus spoke about "this essential thing" Mary had chosen. What do you think this was?
What could be one word to describe Martha? and Mary?
Do you think you identify more with Mary or Martha?
Would you make time and sit and listen to Jesus if He were to walk into your house one day after school or college, or would you be too busy with homework or other activities?
Do you ever get so busy that you forget to talk to and listen to God?
We know things have changed over the last few months and you may have more time on your hands, so have you been able to spent more time with Jesus during this time of lockdown?
Martha was cross that Mary wasn’t helping her in the house. Jesus told her though that Mary was the one doing the right thing. It was not as important to do things for Jesus as it was to spend time with Him. Jesus didn’t want a dusted floor or a fresh loaf of bread. He wanted people.
And that is how He feels about us, too! What’s important is not just what we know or say or do…it’s how we love God. We can breathe and pause and rest in His presence. He is always there for us!
He is waiting for you. Speak to Him. Spend time with Him. He delights in you.
Let's spend some time with Jesus now while we listen to this song 'In Your Presence' by Elevation Worship,
Lord, Thank you for making us part of your family. Thank you that you love us. Thank you that you want to spend time with us. Help us to do this. Help us to slow down and breathe.
And rest in your presence.
In Your name, Amen!
